Our Oak candle is named after and inspired by the Oak Trail in Hoyt Arboretum, a short 0.3-mile path that begins right at the Visitor Center and connects into the Wildwood Trail. It's easy to miss if you're not looking for it — tucked behind the Stevens Pavilion, it's one of the shortest named trails in the arboretum's 12-mile network — but it winds through one of the collection's richest plantings.
Hoyt Arboretum was founded in 1928 to preserve evergreens for educational and recreational use, and its collection has grown to include roughly 60 species of oak from around the world, grouped together as part of the arboretum's original taxonomic layout. Oaks are considered a keystone species everywhere they grow — their acorns are a primary food source for birds, squirrels, and countless other animals through fall and winter, and the trees themselves anchor entire ecosystems around them.
Oak has long been the wood people reach for when something needs to last — fine furniture, timber framing, even the hulls of old sailing ships were built from it. That history is where we started: a scent that's dry and warm, nostalgic and familiar. Dry spice and oak tannins give way to earthy vetiver root and cedar, while oak, warm musk, and creamy benzoin resin linger at the base with hints of worn wood, old books, and waxed oak floors. It’s the candle for the first cold morning of fall — steady, grounding, and made for slowing down as the seasons begin to change, but designed to feel at home year-round.
